MLB Free Agency & World Series Recap

00:04:19
Speaker
All right well the world series is over and now we're into that baseball free agency of getting ready for winter meetings mode. um So we're going to talk a little bit about that today. We're going to talk a little bit NFL. We're going to hit the NCAA playoff picture and we're going to talk some women's sports. so Buckle up, folks. Like I said, free agency started MLB and there are ah a couple of free agents of note that

Juan Soto's Free Agency Dilemma

00:04:48
Speaker
have been signed. to Austin Hedges was re-signed by Cleveland as was TJ McFarland, re-signed by Oakland. Kyle Hendricks does move from the Cubs to the Angels. There's going to be more going on with that. It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out this year. We've got some big names on the list.
00:05:05
Speaker
um 199 so far have opted for the free agent market. I think the biggest name that people are gonna be paying attention about is ah Juan Soto, the outfielder from the Yankees. And Soto's a career 285, 421, 532 hitter. And in the last two years, he's at 76 home runs and driven in 218. If all things were normal, he would be attracting attention from just about every major league team out there.
00:05:35
Speaker
But because his agent is Scott Boris, who is infamous for wanting to drive prices up, you're only gonna see maybe, and I say maybe, a handful of teams looking at Soto. um Because right now the way way it looks, and just guessing by what he's done with other players,
00:06:00
Speaker
I think you're looking at Soto being somewhere in that 30, 35, maybe $40 million dollar range. um I know he, Boros, when Soto was with Washington, was was claiming he had the first $500 million dollar player. I don't think he'll see 50, but the Dodgers have shown everybody how you can do that now. I mean, Shohei Ohtani, $700 million. dollars And they have they are not paying any of it for the next however many years. And you've got Soto in the same type of deal, at least time-wise, length-wise. So and it is possible. I think we could see something like that. But that's, like I said, that's going to limit a lot of teams um going in after. I mean mean, and the question is, will Soto want that? Or will he want his money up front? You know, a guy like Otani,
00:06:55
Speaker
who already had a few years under his belt, had a ah enough of a, I guess, payroll base that he could afford to say, well, you know, maybe I'll just get a couple million a year and just take the rest when I retire.
00:07:08
Speaker
um yeah Soto is not I don't think in that realm yet where he may be comfortable doing that. So we just gonna have to wait and see. um As for who goes after him, I think the Yankees will make a really big push to try and keep him. I think the crosstown Mets are going to try and throw a monkey wrench into that. I think you'd also see maybe Atlanta wanting to add some power to that lineup. ah The Padres may try to snag him back um and possibly to a lesser extent, maybe the Giants or Seattle. And man, how would he look in that Seattle offense but with a couples with the two guys that they got? Wow. But a lot of it's going to be what our team's willing to pay and how is it going to get structured. Like I said, the Otani deal last year has has opened up a new um avenue for teams that are wanting to get these higher
00:08:03
Speaker
end players ah and still retain some financial stability, if you will. So it's going to be very interesting. there Now, so just like I guess said, he's lengthwise, he fits like a tiny because he's only 26. So you could get him on a 10 year deal. He's only 36 at the end. So you're going to still get probably his best years or some of most of his best years.
00:08:26
Speaker
um I think maybe he's probably looking at a Bryce Harper type deal and that 12 to 13 Harper Soto, you know, that 12 to 13 year. Um, I'm sure that's what they're going to be asking for. And you know, it would not surprise me if somebody does go that, but it also wouldn't surprise me if he, if they back off and say, okay, we'll take a 10 year and then maybe try to get a couple, three years afterwards on, um, extensions or something, you know, uh, to finish out for his retirement.

Willie Adames & Shortstop Market Analysis

00:08:57
Speaker
Uh, another name that I think probably is going to draw as much attention, but it, or draw attention, but won't be made much of in the, in the terms of media ah coverage is going to be Willie Adamas, a shortstop of the Brewers. You know, he's the kind of guy that every team really wants and actually needs a good all around player that can get you offense, defense, not be hurting you you know in terms of in terms of big payroll. Now he's still gonna cost some money. I don't think he's not gonna be anywhere near Soto money, that's for sure. um But you know he had 251, 331, 462 with 32 round trippers on 112 RBIs last year and stole 21 bases. This is why I say he's he's kind of an all around offensive player and he plays some gold glub caliber defense.
00:09:49
Speaker
So teams that are looking for that middle and field help, you know, this is a place where they can go and they're going to get a guy that is solid. Uh, now he's 29, so he's three years older, uh, than Soto would be. So you're not looking at probably getting him on a long-term deal. You're maybe looking at six years, you know, seven max. Um, and you know, he was last year, he only made 12.2 million. So you go to the natural progression.
00:10:20
Speaker
Maybe he's around the 20 to 25 million range. There might be a team or two out there willing to pay 30, but I doubt it. But if they can get him for 20 to 25, seven year deal, you're looking at $170 million dollars wrapped up in a guy that is going to be very productive for you. And I think, like I said, again, there's a teams that do need that shortstop upgrade, the Braves, the Giants, ah Guardians, Seattle again.
00:10:47
Speaker
So, you know, you're looking, I would not be surprised if the Yankees didn't try to sneak in there, especially if they lose Soto. um You know, there's just a number of teams that could probably, he could probably fit into. Now, if teams are looking to upgrade their power and it's only going to need to be a short term upgrade, then I think you may look at Tiaska Hernandez or the Dodgers. um He's a lifetime 260 hitter. He's at 192 home runs and 572 RBIs over his career.
00:11:17
Speaker
He's a solid overall average in power. He can drive in runs. He's an average defender. I mean, yeah I make that sound like it's something big. I didn't mean to really, ah but he is. He's and he kind of an average or maybe a slightly above average defender. He's not going to hurt you in the outfield. Almost what I'm trying to get at.
00:11:36
Speaker
Um, so he's not just this big power bat that can't play in the outfield. Although if, you know, if there's a team that's got an outfield situation, it's pretty nice. You know, Hernandez could be a nice little DH for you. Um, he's 32. So that's why I say he's a short term solution because you're not going to pay him more than four or five.
00:11:57
Speaker
ah Five years would be the absolute maximum. I could see anybody going probably is gonna be more like a three-year deal and You know, he's due to make he made 23 5 last year. That's about his market average So you're looking at you know, maybe 24 million in a year So just ah under seventy five thousand dollars for three years you put a couple performance bonuses in there make a nice little payday for him and And you know he got it for three or four years. And like I said, ton of teams could use him. I know, you know, you look at the Braves and you don't think of them needing power, but they could. ah The Giants obviously Mets, Yankees, Cubs, Padres, Angels, Royals, even the Cardinals might look at it. I know they're talking about moving court.
00:12:48
Speaker
Contreras excuse me to first base. They've got the young kids for the outfield, you know, but he could be that that outfield DH guy um I know they're talking look they're talking at Luke and Baker maybe for that DH spot um you Maybe Contreras and Baker you can can switch off between DH and first base, but Hernandez could fit in there, too um but Like I said, if you're looking for that short term power bat, I mean, he could could be one when you look at, you know, you've got some other guys that are probably names that are going to be out there. And Paul Goldschmidt, Anthony Santander, Alex Bergman, Peter Lonzo, they're all going to be out there. And so we'll just see how everybody plays out.
00:13:33
Speaker
in that as it comes, as it goes along. And I'll try to get the hot stove going here probably in a couple of weeks.

Pitchers on the Move: Snell & Flaherty

00:13:39
Speaker
On the pitching side of things, we got two names who lingered on the vine last season and ended up signing, you know, wanting six, five, six, seven year deals, ended up signing for a year. That's Blake Snell and Jack Flaherty. This is where I think Scott Boris hurts himself sometimes.
00:13:54
Speaker
Is, you know, he gets these guys and tries to get in this big money and when they can't, and they end up with these little one year deals, uh, if things go horribly wrong or even slightly wrong, then you're hurting yourself on your next deal coming in.
00:14:11
Speaker
Now and on the upside, if you have a really great year, you just increased your stock value by a little bit. So ah Blake Snell was the was and Jack Flaherty were the two I'm talking about. Now Snell did get ah did get banged up last year, and and but he managed managed to finish 20 games for Frisco, going into 104 pitches and going five and three with a 3.12 ERA, 2.43 FIP, 145 Ks to just 44 walks.
00:14:38
Speaker
It's not a bad season for being hurt. Um, now he's also a lefty, so that's going to make him a little more desirable. The issue with Snell is he's 31. Now that's not saying that's not necessarily a bad mark on him. It's just saying, okay, when you start looking at pictures,
00:14:59
Speaker
you know, around, with the exception of a few, with around the age 35, that's when you start to see that decline in the fastball, maybe not quite as sharp with the curve ball. So, you know, he's in that gray area where it's like, okay, do we want to go for him for three or four years? Or do we want to, you know, just do a one year, see how it works out?
00:15:23
Speaker
I think he's going to get a lot of mixed reviews and a lot of mixed signals on where who and what is going to come after him. But, you know, about any team, if you if you could sign it for three years, any team would do that, I think. And, you know, he made 31 million last year. I don't think he'll get 31 million this year.
00:15:43
Speaker
I just don't see it. He could. I'm not saying it won't happen. i just I'm just saying I don't see it given some of the other pictures that are out there and the fact that yeah know i guess said he's 31.
00:15:57
Speaker
yes he pitched well after injury last year, but you know, really teams are going to look at it in a different light. Um, the other guy, as Jack Flaherty, as I said, uh, he actually, I think increased his opportunities. Um,
00:16:17
Speaker
I'm gonna get back to it real quick on on so on um ah Snell. you know I do think, like I said, he's not gonna get that 31 million, but you could so I could see 25 for Snell. Somebody might go to and match what he did last year, but I don't think Boris is gonna push it as hard as he did last year to try and get Snell a long-term deal, or ah any kind of a multi-year deal.
00:16:44
Speaker
Flaherty, who started with Detroit, ended up in the World Series ring with from LA. He did a nice campaign when you really look at it. 28 games, 317 ERA. He was 13-7. He only threw 162 innings, but you figure that's not really terrible. um you know That works out pretty decent.
00:17:05
Speaker
He struck out 194 batters, only walked 38. So in that respect, he did a lot better than Snell did. But he also pitched him more games. So, you know, go figure. But Flaherty's only 29. So teams are still can still look at him at a six year deal and say, okay, we might be willing to talk to you about that.
00:17:25
Speaker
Now, he didn't make a lot last year, you know, his market value right now projected just a tick over $20 million. dollars So a team can look at that and say, okay, six years, we'll give you 135. And I don't think Boros should should blink at that. And I don't think he will, I think it it'll it'll happen. I think that's what you're gonna see for him, where he goes,
00:17:52
Speaker
again he he's the kind of picture that I think when he's on and he's right and you know the the ceiling I think is still very high for him so you're looking at Padres could add to their their lineup the Mets the Braves always Braves are always looking Braves. Well, there's one thing you can count on the Atlanta Braves to do every off season and that's look for pitching. I mean, I think the Braves among a few teams get it, secure your pitching first, then worry about the offense. Uh, and they don't have a bad offense to worry about anyway. So just secure the pitching and everything takes care of itself. Um,
00:18:35
Speaker
Now, one other starting picture to that I think is, is a worth of note.

MLB Teams' Offseason Strategies

00:18:42
Speaker
And I just don't know what he's going to get. I mean, this, this could be the picture that everybody waits on to see who, if he signed before they signed anybody else of ace caliber, if you will.
00:18:56
Speaker
And that is a Corbin burns. See over the last four years, Corbin burns is 48 and 30 of the two nine for ERA 858 strikeouts and only 199 walks in 757 innings. I mean, there's, There's consistency there. There's a high level of consistency there and teams are going to be willing to pay for that. Um, you could see, I definitely think he's going to looking at a $30 million payday. Uh, how many years is going to be very interesting. He is age 30. So he's right at that little borderline area where I think, you know, teams are looking at five, six years.
00:19:37
Speaker
Um, six years at 30 million makes him a $200 million player or almost a $200 million player. Um, yeah, it gives them 180. And then if you throw some incentives in, you could, you could sign a pretty decent little contract. Um, and again,
00:19:51
Speaker
Here's a, I think the Dodgers may be looking at at him. You know, they've got, even with Shohei Otani, they've got money to spend, you know, and they're losing a couple of pictures to free agents. So Burns could be just restocking the tool cabinet, if you will. The Yankees could look at him. I think the Orioles might try to lure him back. I don't know if that'll be successful. We'll have to see it as the days go by.
00:20:18
Speaker
Now, as we look at this off season and free agency, you know, you've got the teams like, uh, that are looking for just to upgrade, to get that next level of where they need to be, you know, uh, Royals, Cubs, Tigers, yeah even the giants to a certain extent. Um, but it's one of those where, okay, they identify the one or two areas.
00:20:44
Speaker
that they need and then I'll go get it and then it they hopefully they're set they set themselves up. Now you've got other teams like St. Louis, Washington, Cincinnati that just I mean they've tinkered and tinkered long enough now it's time to do something different. um So we're going to see how those play out against each other.
00:21:06
Speaker
So it should make for some interesting hot stove talk and I'll get some guys on You know, maybe we'll get some guys on here in the next couple of weeks.

NFL Season Update & Playoff Preview

00:21:14
Speaker
Hopefully before the Winter meetings and we'll get some hot stove going ah Now so while baseball is taking its ah free agent rest if you will Football is just passed a halfway point during the league week 11 the NFL I Don't know I've I don't know if it's lost its luster with me or not. Um, I follow a still, I follow my team. I am a Packer fans. I do follow the Packers.
00:21:46
Speaker
And I watch the games every so often. But I don't know, for some reason this doesn't seem, it just kind of snuck up on me this year. So I apologize for getting late into the season before talking about football. But we are having playoffs approaching fairly quickly here. So as we look at it, AFC standings or the AFC East is the Buffalo Bills pretty much run away from everybody in that division. They're sitting there at eight and two and everybody else.
00:22:11
Speaker
ah Jets, Patriots, and Dolphins only have three wins each. um so I think that division is pretty much a ah wash and over. They have seen North a little more competition going on as Pittsburgh is seven and two, Baltimore seven and three. They're gonna fight it out until the end and see who's gonna come out of the head on that division. Cincinnati's hanging around at four and six, but they better start winning or they're definitely gonna be on the outside looking in.
00:22:37
Speaker
The Browns are really no threat at two and seven the AFC shot south shows Houston now They've lost their last two games, but they're still leaving the division at six and four kind of test you how bad that division is um the Colts are Four and six and the Titans two and seven Jaguars two and eight ah AFC West has the only NFL's only unbeaten team in the Kansas City Chiefs at nine and oh The Chargers are six and three under new coach Jim Harbaugh Denver sitting there at six at five and five, so they're still in a playoff option Vegas however, the Raiders are disappointing two and seven and Now over in the NFC the East shows a healthy battle between a seven and two Eagle squad and a seven and three commander squad. Now Philly does have a five game winning streak and the only thing keeping the hapless Cowboys ah three and six out of the bottom of the division is more even the more hapless New York Giants. They can't seem to find neither team can seem to find a way to win no matter what they do. um The NFC North shows Detroit team that's
00:23:44
Speaker
turning some heads and making believers out of people. and They're eight and one currently on a seven game winning streak and that's important ah for the fact that it's showing that you know they for whatever reason that team has come together and they are turning themselves into a juggernaut just at the right time for playoff season.
00:24:04
Speaker
Um, Minnesota though is hot on their heels at seven and two green Bay's not out of it yet, uh, at six and three, but they need to make a move quick or they're going to be out of it. Uh, the bears, uh, are four and five and really just. They're a train wreck. That's all I can say. They're a train wreck.
00:24:27
Speaker
The NFC South has Atlanta sitting on top at 6 and 4, Tampa Bay's at 4 and 6, New Orleans, Carolina both 3 and 7, so there's still time for anybody to win that division. um The NFC West shows a Arizona team that was 2 and two and four, four weeks ago is now four and so four or six and four. The 49ers are next at five and four, and the Rams and the Seahawks both sit at the bottom at four and six. So again, that's another division. thats you could stiff If a team another team gets hot, we could see something change there. So if the playoffs were held today, the AFC would look like this. KAC gets to buy.
00:25:06
Speaker
Denver would be taking on Buffalo the Chargers would play at Pittsburgh and Baltimore would be on the road at Houston So you guy which is kind of interesting here because yeah depending on who's winning or who's got the division win um You know Pittsburgh is playing at home at seven and two Against the six and three team while Baltimore at seven and three has to travel to Houston, you know and It's kind of crazy home home field advantage is not given to the team with a better record in the NFL like it is in MLB. Um, but that's, you know, that's the way it is. Uh, NFC would look like this. Detroit gets the first round by green Bay squares off in Philly. Washington goes to Atlanta and Minnesota would gout go out, go out to the desert and take on the Cardinals.
00:25:56
Speaker
you know A couple of items here going through the NFL, as I mentioned, the Bears are a train wreck. They fired ah offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, passing game coordinator Thomas Brown will now assume the OC duties for the remainder of the season. you know The Bears, they traded Justin Fields and they went and drafted their quarterback of the future, Caleb Williams. And it's become an unmitigated disaster. Now, I don't know if it's all ah The offensive coordinator's fault, I mean, you look at his numbers, 178 of 294 for 1758 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight picks. Okay, if you have a passing game coordinator and an offensive coordinator and your quarterback is not doing well, you're going to fire the offensive coordinator and put the guy that's directly coaching that quarterback as your offensive coordinator.
00:26:49
Speaker
Again, not sure where in the world this makes a lot of sense. Uh, but that's again, that's the bears for you. It's a train wreck. Now over in Dallas, Dak Prescott is out for the season to have surgery on a partially torn hamstring. Uh, that occurred back against the Falcons in week nine originally thought only to be out a couple of weeks. It looks like it's going to be longer and they're going to have to do without Mr. Prescott. But as I said, they're going nowhere. So they've got time. Um, now what the interesting part about that is prior to the season, Prescott had signed a contract distinction worth $240 million. dollars I mean, that's the irony of things.
00:27:30
Speaker
And it happens you see it happen, though you can't do anything about injury, but you know you have a guy, you sign him to a big contract extension or a big contract, and at first year he basically brings you nothing. um And Prescott actually has struggled this year, 185 of 286 for only 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight picks. So you know maybe taking the rest of the year off might do him some good.
00:27:57
Speaker
Cooper Rush will be the starter going forward with Trey Lance as their backup. In Pittsburgh, Russell Wilson is now the quarterback of the Steelers, replacing an ineffective Justin Fields. And so far this season, six games. Fields was 106, 160 for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one pick. Now, Wilson's only played the last three games so far, but he's 50 of 85, 737 yards, six TDs and one pick.
00:28:25
Speaker
Um, you know, the Steelers are on a four game winning streak. And like I said, three of those games are mostly large part due to the change of quarterback of Russell Wilson. Uh, if you don't know, if you look at it, uh, three games, he's thrown forward 200 yards in games and in six games field never saw 200 yards.
00:28:43
Speaker
So, you know, there, there it is. Uh, the commanders have been playing pretty well this season. Um, Jaden Daniels is really showing what kind of a dual threat he can be with nine passing touchdowns, four rushing touchdowns. Uh, Terry McClellan at wide receiver is his third in NFL receptions with 611 and tied for third with in TD catches with six. Uh, I mentioned Arizona Cardinals are being atop the NFC West.
00:29:11
Speaker
and being on a ah winning streak. But is it really that prominent of a winning streak when you've beaten the Chargers, Dolphins, Bears, and Jets? i mean yeah I'm just laying it out there, folks. OK? But Kyler Murray doesn't look too bad. He's the being a dual threat over there as well, with 2,000 yards passing, 12 TDs. He's rushed for 371 yards and four more scores. ah The 49ers started out stumbling out of the gate.
00:29:41
Speaker
But they've won three out of their last four. They've got Christian McCaffrey back. So the Cardinals may find themselves in a playoff race or any division race before to try to get to the playoffs. um A lot of people are wondering about the Chiefs going undefeated. I'm going to say no. um I think they've got Buffalo this weekend and then Houston and Pittsburgh near the end of the season.
00:30:06
Speaker
You know, I, while I think it's, it's very possible to go undefeated. I just, uh, I, I don't see it happen. And I think Buffalo's going to be the one that trips him up. And if not Buffalo, probably Pittsburgh. I'm going to try and keep more of an eye on NFL. Like I said, it snuck up on me this year and I apologize. I have, you know, didn't mean to just spring the NFL on you guys, but, uh,
00:30:27
Speaker
So let me get as we get closer to the playoffs, we'll look at that and kind of keep that updated. Excuse me. We're going to get to more sports in a minute, but have you heard of hydration multiplication? Well, that's what you get from liquid IV powdered sports drink. It delivers two times faster hydration in water and three times the electrolytes of traditional sports drinks.
00:30:47
Speaker
It uses a process called cellular transport technology, which acts as a hydration multiplier designed to deliver more rapids of rapid absorption into the body. It also delivers key vitamins like B3, B5, B6, B12, and vitamin C. Its non-GMO contains no soy, no dairy, and is gluten-free, so it's good for everybody.
00:31:07
Speaker
The human body is 60 to 70% water and it can contains key electrolytes, yeah know sodium and glucose and things of that nature that are essential for good health. you know When you exercise, play sports or just your general daily routine, you do lose hydration.
00:31:24
Speaker
And most Americans drink less than 50% of the water we're supposed to. and Dehydration can be considered severe enough to put you in the hospital. And trust me, I know all about that. Been there, done that, wrote the book on it. ah So it's important to stay hydrated.
00:31:38
Speaker
you know, you're working out in the yard or whether you're just ah yeah a workout it in the gym, you know, you got to replace what you're getting rid of. Liquid IV helps you do that. They have a multitude of formulas and flavors. The electrolyte replacement for them is good. As I say, if you're working out in the yard or working out in the gym, um going on a hike, something to put in your backpack, keep yourself hydrated as you're going along and replace those key vital ingredients.

energy hydration formula that works much better than coffee, tastes a little bit better to some people probably. There's an immune boosting formula which can help you fight off those nasty colds. They also have a kombucha blend for dietary health and even have a formula for better sleep through hydration. You know they've got a lot of grape flavors. I'm kind of partial to golden cherry, Azu pineapple and strawberry lemonade, um but they've got things like green grape and white peach and even a piña colada minus the alcohol of course. It also comes in a sugar-free blend that uses an amino acid instead of artificial sweeteners. So again, more toward good health.
00:32:47
Speaker
There's even a hydration foam designed for kids. they've They've thought of all of this. um And it's in flavors kids really like, like crisp apple, tropical punch, banana, cotton candy, even Concord grape. Liquid IV is conveniently packaged in individual pouches or sticks so that you can take them literally anywhere, the beach, the gym, the office, the school, even on an airplane. And I didn't know this, but in an airplane, the humidity is five to 12% less than the Sahara desert.
00:33:15
Speaker
So long flights will get you dehydrated and it's the dehydration that causes the jet lag. So coffee and tea aren't going to help you. The caffeine acts more, you know, more of a dehydrator than a hydrator. And so just get a bottle of water, drop in a stick of liquid IV and you can stay hydrated during that long flight and fight the jet lag.

NCAA Football Rankings & Playoff Possibilities

00:34:24
Speaker
All right, we're gonna switch to the NCAA. Football is winding its way toward the playoffs and the CFP rankings are out now. The latest from the CFP and the projected seeds as they go. And just to remind everybody that the, and not strictly by ranking, it's the top, ah the champions of the four power conferences get the top four seeds.
00:34:50
Speaker
Okay, so here we go. ah Oregon is number one at 10 and O, they're projected as the number one seed. Ohio State is number two at eight and one, projected as a five. Texas, three, also eight and one, they're projected as the two seed. Penn State is eight and one, or they're number four at eight and one, projected as the six seed. Indiana is 10 and O, they're number five, projected as the seven seed. Number six is BYU, nine and O, projected as the three.
00:35:20
Speaker
Number seven is Tennessee. Eight and one projected is the eight. Notre Dame is eight and one. Right now they're the number 18, eight and one projected as the nine seed. Miami is number nine. Nine and one projected as the four seed. Number 10 is Alabama. Seven and two projected as the 10. Ole Miss is number 11. At eight and two projected as the number 11.
00:35:44
Speaker
Georgia is number 12 at seven and two and they are not projected. And the reason why is this? Because the power five or the group of, uh, excuse me, the group of five gets a bid, an automatic bid. One of those teams gets an automatic bid. And if they are not ranked in the top 12, they would replace that 12 team. And right now, currently there's the number 13 team in Boise state at eight and one projected as the 12 seat.
00:36:11
Speaker
Rest of the 25 looks like this. SMU 14 at 8 and 1. Texas A and&M is number 15 at 7 and 2. Kansas State is 16 at 7 and 2. Colorado is 17 at 7 and 2. Washington State is 18th at 8 and 1.
00:36:27
Speaker
Louisville and I'm not sure why we've got a, we've got a couple of them in here, but Louisville is number 19 at six and three. Clemson is number 20 at seven and two. South Carolina is number 21 at six and three. LSU is 22 at six and three. Missouri is 23 at seven and two. Army is 24 at nine and O and Tulane is number 25 at eight and two. Okay. So a couple of things here. Now,
00:36:56
Speaker
You guys know me, I'm a big 10 guy. i I mean, I live in the middle of big 10 country. I'm a big 10 guy. Even I am questioning putting four big 10 teams in the top five. and i And I say that with all seriousness is look at who they've played. Ohio State has played two ranked teams. They're one and one.
00:37:27
Speaker
Penn State has played two ranked teams. They're one and one. Oregon has played two ranked teams and they're 2-0 against them. And Indiana has yet to play a ranked team and it's 10-0. I have to struggle with that a little bit.
00:37:45
Speaker
Um, and even Oregon, now Oregon, I can, I can a little give a little bit of leeway too. Cause like I said, they they have played two ranked teams. They're two and oh, and they beat a good Boise state team before Boise state was ranked. So in a sense, they've actually beaten three, um, ranked teams. So.
00:38:06
Speaker
you have to look at the other thing is with the SEC. And I know that a lot of people are, it's a back and forth on, on social media between SEC fans and big 10 fans. Oh, we've got five. You've only got four that, now okay. I'm kind of sick and tired of hearing that because quite frankly, the SEC has got the same problem as the big 10. There's not a lot of teams in the SEC that have played a, what I would call a, a championship type schedule. Um,
00:38:36
Speaker
You know, probably the best, and we'll get to it out here in a second, but you know, I think it's just a matter of, you know, look at what's supposedly the blue bloods in the big 10 and the SEC. You're looking at the Ohio States. Of course, Michigan is in is in a shambles this year. um You look at, in the SEC, like the Alabama's in their Georgia and the Tennessee.
00:39:01
Speaker
Uh, Texas is brand new to the ACC, you know, Oregon's brand new to the big 10, you know, so you got teams are traditionally not part of those conferences now they're in. So, you know, cause Oregon would be a pat would have been a pack 12 team and, uh, Texas would have been a big 12 team. So, you know, how much has that played into it? So I don't know, you know, what the actual answer is and how those guys make the.
00:39:28
Speaker
determinations and where they put things. But I'm going to kind of look at each of the top 12 or top 15 teams, and then I'll give you my, my top 12 or my top 25. Okay. Oregon, uh, they've got, like I said, is number one. Now they've got a preseason strength of schedule at 25 and it was 25th and their current strength of schedule is 34th.
00:39:50
Speaker
Like as I said, they got two top 25 wins against Ohio State and Illinois. ah Now, of course, Illinois is out of the top 25. And its something you're going to see as we go along is a lot of these teams that have beaten or have top 25 wins, some of those teams are no longer in the top 25, but it still counts as a top 25 win.
00:40:08
Speaker
At least I'm counting as still as a top 25 win. So, um, so now you look at, like I said, in the Boise state, they beat who wasn't ranked at the time, but now they're 13th. Uh, then you got Ohio state, uh, eight and one. Now their preseason strength of strength of schedule was 23 and their current is 30. And I think that's only because they've got Indiana left on their schedule.
00:40:33
Speaker
But again, Ohio State, and you know they beat a decent Nebraska team, they beat Penn State, and they lost to Oregon. Outside of that, they don't have a win that looks exciting that looks like it's, hey, that was a good win. I mean, yeah, they've beaten some teams, they beat up on some teams and okay, that's fine, but it's teams they should have beat up on. So it was not like it was unexpected in what they've done other than those three games that I mentioned.
00:41:06
Speaker
ah Texas is ah number three, isai as there are eight and one. ah The preseason rank of schedule on them was 21 and it's currently 17. They've still got a couple decent games left on the schedule and they've been rolling over opponents by 20 points with the exception of two teams, George and Vanderbilt.
00:41:25
Speaker
um and
00:41:32
Speaker
they have top four top 25 wins. And again, you're gonna hear some teams that aren't in a top 25. Michigan, Oklahoma, Georgia, and Vandy. And okay, granted, three of those teams are no longer in the top 25. And Vandy at 25 was kind of a, I think they were kind of a stretch to put in at 25, but you know.
00:41:51
Speaker
They had just come off of beating Alabama, so I guess you give them give them a little little headline, if you will. um But again, what's their schedule been like? Louisiana Monroe, and I just, you know, you have to think about it. Penn State, as you know, eight and one, their preseason ranked schedule was 21, it's currently 68, because they've got nobody left to play. That's of any consequence.
00:42:20
Speaker
um You know, so any kind of a loss I think at this point in the next three games for Penn State Yeah, I hate to say it but it could drop them Really a bunch of spots ah Indiana's in the same boat ah Now they've got a perfect 10-0 record they haven't played anybody They have not played one team worth the consequence um Now they do have Iowa State coming up and
00:42:52
Speaker
They just beat a Michigan team by five. So really, how good are they? They've rolled over everybody else. I mean, they they blew out Nebraska, who was a pretty decent team until that happened. you know But their preseason rank of strength of schedule was 63. Their current rank is 19th. And again, I think that's only because they got to play Ohio State.
00:43:15
Speaker
Um, they've got a couple of their games coming up, but that's, they're going to be their big one. Cause if they can beat Ohio state, they have a really good shot at going undefeated and they would be in the big 10 championship game against Oregon. If Ohio state wins that game, then it's Ohio state versus Oregon. That's, that's the plain and simple fact of it.
00:43:37
Speaker
So that is a big game for them. Uh, BYU at six, their preseason rank of schedule was 38. Their current is 56. Now they didn't play a grueling schedule, but it wasn't cupcake either. I mean, they beat MS or SMU, uh, who are who' currently 14th and they beat a then number 13 Kansas state who's currently 16th, you know, but that's their signature wins.
00:44:04
Speaker
Now it's, they're still good wins and beating, you know, beating both those teams is not hurting them in any way, shape or form. Not to say that, but you know that that's their signature wins. They didn't really have. And a lot of that is big 12 is of course been restructured. You don't have Texas in there anymore. Uh, Oklahoma kind of faded. They came out strong and faded back. Oklahoma state did the same thing. Kansas, a big team from a team last year, everybody was counting on. They faded out. So, you know, it's kind of, uh, I think they got stuck with the, with a bad, a bad conference this year. And and that conference is going to get better as the, as.
00:44:43
Speaker
They start working a little bit more Tennessee eight and one their strength the schedule to start the season was 32nd and they're currently 41st on strength of schedule They do have a win over Alabama was number seven But they also lost to in a Arkansas team now they start to play Georgia, which is this weekend and And a lot of people saying it's not necessarily a death knell if they if they Tennessee beats Georgia. I'm saying it is. I don't see a way that the committee is going to put in any team with three losses. I just i just don't see it. And maybe I'm wrong, but I just don't see that.
00:45:27
Speaker
Uh, but Tennessee's had, uh, had a decent schedule and there's right now they're, they're, they're tops in the SEC. They are, they leave the SEC along with Texas and Texas A&M. So, you know, uh, there is something to be said for that. Notre Dame, um, their eight and one, their preseason schedule was ranked was 45. Their current is 37. Uh, and they do own a win over Texas A&M, albeit the first game of the season. Um,
00:45:58
Speaker
and They were Texas name was number 20. They have a win over her Louisville who was 15th and They beat Navy just a a week or two last week at 51 to 14 Navy was ranked at the time. I can't remember. I think it was like 24th or something like that now Everybody points that at Northern Illinois loss. I have a second game in the season. So that's kind of gone down the wayside and they've won another they won enough games, um bigger games that I don't think that's going to really hurt them much or shouldn't hurt them much. Miami, nine and one, their preseason rank was 49 currently at 63. They're third in the ACC behind SMU and Clemson. And they were undefeated until last week and they got beat by Georgia Tech. Now late season loss to a team like that, an unranked team,
00:46:50
Speaker
That does have a tendency to play ah not too well in committees. Alabama, their preseason rank was six. They're currently at 107 on their strength of schedule. I mean, they barely don't have anybody left other than Auburn in the iron bowl. You know, they do own top 25 wins over Georgia, over Missouri, LSU.
00:47:14
Speaker
um So, you know, are they really a tenor? Should they move up or, you know, just what is it? They are seven and two. I mean, that's the thing. And one of those losses at the Vanderbilt, the other one is to Tennessee. So if it comes down to it, um you know, even if Tennessee loses another game, they still hold the advantage over Alabama in terms of head to head.
00:47:39
Speaker
Ole Miss 8-2 with a preseason schedule rank of 27. Currently it's 91st. They do have a win against then number three Georgia, one of Georgia's two losses. And they also have losses though to the number 13 ranked LSU and an unranked Kentucky team.
00:48:01
Speaker
So that's going to play. They're also fifth in the SEC and I don't know if I really like the idea of going down that far into a conference to get a playoff team when you've got some other deserving teams in other conferences. ah Georgia as we said is number 12.
00:48:19
Speaker
Their preseason strength. The schedule was for their current is 57. They do have a top 25 win against Texas ah who is number one and a win against Clemson who was 14 at the time. They are currently sitting forth in the SEC and. But as I said, as that 12 team there are not guaranteed a spot in that playoff as long as Boise State or a group of five team is not in the top 12.
00:48:48
Speaker
which brings me to Boise State. Eight and one, their preseason rank of schedule was 79. It's hadn't gotten any better. It went to 105. So, you know, really, it is not their fault to an extent. They play in the Mountain West. Now, their only loss is to Oregon um and they beat Washington State, who is now in the top 25. So they actually do in a top 25 win. Now they do have nothing really in the way of of big games coming up so that probably will go will finish the season with only one loss you know but again when you're looking at the power fire the group of five it's it's a crapshoot on that who's going to be next uh smu is 14th the preseason rank of schedule was 68 current is 40 now they are five and only acc
00:49:46
Speaker
And they're a top team in their conference ah ahead of Clemson, Miami and Louisville. They own top 25 wins versus Louisville and Pittsburgh. Their only loss is to BYU. So my question becomes, why are they sitting outside of the top 12 and you've got Miami in the top 12? Um, okay. Miami's and or Miami's nine and one.
00:50:14
Speaker
and SMU is eight and one, but SMU is leading the conference and go figure. Uh, Texas A and&M is at 15 and that, um, preseason rank of schedule was 14th. They're now 59th. Now they do have a lost an odor to him again, first game of the season, but they've got wins over Missouri and LSU. Both were ranked. They lost to an unranked South Carolina team who now is ranked. Um,
00:50:43
Speaker
because of that win and they're tied with Tennessee and Texas. Now they do play Texas at the end of the season, so that could have a really big effect on how this goes. Uh, key state, uh, seven and two, they have a preseason ranking of 48 for strength of schedule. Currently it's 32nd. They're sitting at fifth in the big 12 behind unranked Arizona and unranked Iowa state. I'm not sure how bats plan out. Maybe the strength of schedule.
00:51:13
Speaker
But it has something to do with it. But K-State does have two top 25 wins over Arizona and Oklahoma. They could be in the Big 12 championship game. They could make it that way and get an upset on Apple Card or two. Just depends on how everything else goes. So how how do you figure what they're where they're at?
00:51:34
Speaker
So again, how would I rank these guys? Well, all I can say is I'm glad I'm not on a committee. I really am. Because again, I don't know the criteria they use, but after looking at record, strength of schedule, and top 25 wins versus in ranked losses, here's what I came up with.
00:51:52
Speaker
Texas is my number one. Tennessee is my number two. Oregon is my number three. BYU four. Notre Dame five. Ohio State six. SMU seven. I know that's going to shock some people. as As if Texas and Tennessee didn't already do that. Penn State eight. Miami nine. Indiana ten. Texas A and&M eleven. Alabama twelve.
00:52:13
Speaker
Georgia 13, Ole Miss 14, Boise State is 15, LSU 16, Army 19, Colorado 20, Washington State 21, Missouri 22, Louisville 23, South Carolina 24, and Clemson is my number 25. I know that is gonna just shoot me later, okay? But that's the way I think. um Now,
00:52:37
Speaker
russ and russ wils Russ Robinson and I'll go over some some of this next week. We'll have another week under our belt. Maybe it'll be a little bit more clear who's in, who's out. you know but The reason I did some of what I did is because, you know, Ohio State, Penn State pretty much have powder puff schedules. um As for as same as Indiana, I mean those three, when you're not only playing one or two ranked teams or no ranked teams. Now, that's not necessarily their fault because they don't get to know who's going to be ranked before they schedule the season.
00:53:10
Speaker
but but You got to take into consideration. You got to take that in with the grain of salt I think Texas A and&M deserves to be in that top 12 It's you know this Especially with the way things have gone and their tops in the in the conference Ole Miss is way down there isn't down there far enough So but like I said, we got a week things will change now you do have some big games coming up over the next couple three weeks ah and The first one is Georgia, Tennessee. That's today, this Saturday. ah Indiana, Ohio State, November 23rd. That's next week. Notre Dame gets Army next week. And Texas and Texas A and&M square off at the end of the season, November 30th. So those are some big games kind of that kind of but that's gonna have a really big effect on how this playoff thing goes along. And as I said, Russ and I'll be breaking this down next week.
00:54:05
Speaker
And hopefully we'll have a little bit more picture of who's in, who's out, who's got the wins, who's got the losses. There might be a couple upsets that um down in in the lower part that may cause some consternation with the vote with the committee. um I want to finish up on college basketball.

Spotlight on Women's College Basketball

00:54:23
Speaker
um no I'm going to go a little long, but I'm going to finish up on college basketball. A quick note.
00:54:31
Speaker
We, we go and we see men's games all the time and we report and we talk about men's games. Rarely do we talk about the women's sports. So what I'm going to do, I'm, I've kind of idea that I'm going to start dedicating a portion of my show to women's sports, especially in the NCAA. Um, you know, after land, I'm gonna start with basketball because after last season or during last season, yeah the whole thing about Kaitlyn Clark that put a big spotlight on women's NCAA basketball.
00:55:00
Speaker
And it was great. It was great. um But Caitlin's gone now. And we've got a new NCAA season rolling around. And it's pretty much crickets. What do you hear about the NCAA women?
00:55:15
Speaker
Nothing. We hear a lot about the men's teams. Don't hear hot hardly anything about the women's teams. ah Let's start off. i'm like so I'm going to start looking at some of these teams, players, coaches, and we'll just highlight some things here. I got about three teams, four teams I want to talk about today, and then we'll we'll we'll wrap it all up.
00:55:34
Speaker
Um, first team we want to talk about is the currently listed as the number one team in the nation, the lady game Cox from South Carolina. Now they're coached by former Naismith player of the year in 91 or 92 Dawn Staley. Um, South Carolina is the defending national champion.
00:55:51
Speaker
from last year, I bet people didn't realize that. There was so much about Caitlin Clark, they didn't know who won the the championship. um They are on a very impressive 40 game winning streak. They won, or rights maybe 41 now I think, but they won 38 games last year plus they're undefeated so far this season. They're actually number one in the polls and they captured all 31 first place votes this last week. That's hard to do. Now they're led by a gal by the name of 16 points, three and a half assists and two steals per game. Now this team is very tough on the boards. They've got 92 boards and in two games. 59 of those were on the defensive end, so they really played tough defense. Haven Johnson is their leading rebounder at eight boards a game and she's a guard.
00:56:42
Speaker
Okay, um she's backed up by the inside game of Joyce Edwards and Ashlyn Watkins, both average in six boards a game. And Edwards also has six steals in two games and averages nine points per contest. You know, this is a team that's got some weapons.
00:56:57
Speaker
um And then, uh, this next team is coached by one of the true legends in women's college basketball. And I think actually in all college basketball, we really get down to it. And that's, um, Luji Gino Arima. Uh, he became the head coach at a Yukon women's program in 1985 and is still there.
00:57:17
Speaker
It's 39 years the man's been at the been at the helm of UConn. And in that time, they won 1215 games, lost only 162. In tournament play, he's won 37 and He's got 11 NCAA Division I tournament championships, 23 NCAA Final Fours.
00:57:37
Speaker
27 conference tournament championships, 28 regular season championships. He's an 8 time Naismith coach of the year, 7 time WBCA national coach of the year, 9 times Voto coach of the year by the AP, 6 times by the USBWA,
00:57:55
Speaker
12-time Big East Coach of the Year, 6-time ACC Coach of the Year, he's won the John Wooden Award, he's in the Women's but Basketball ball Hall of Fame, 3-time gold medal winner as a coach for the Olympics,
00:58:10
Speaker
yeah I could go on, there's more, but I need to stop for in the interest of time. UConn is 3-0, and they just beat ah number 14, North Carolina. They've got a very solid lineup. Guard Paige Boukers is leading scorer with 21.3 points a game. She also dishes out four assists.
00:58:32
Speaker
has three steals a game. ah Forward Sarah Strong averages 14.7 points a game, eight rebounds, four and a half, 4.3 assists, 2.7 steals and two blocks a game. Ashlyn Shade is the steals leader on the team with 3.3 while adding nine points a game. And Jana El Alfie at the center averages 8.7 points a game, 7.3 rebounds a game.
00:58:57
Speaker
Now Caitlin Chen is the team's assist leader with five assists per game. This team, has they can hit you from so many different angles. They got so many good players and you can't stop just one. You've got you've got to find a way to play them all. um Now, i one thing I think also, I don't think I just happened to catch it. I just happened to find it. USC had an 85 point win over uh the college of south some other college in cal in california i can't remember the exact name of the college right now it escapes me uh but they've won 139 or 124 to 39 um you know a large part of their success is due to sophomore guard juju watkins who's scoring at 21 and a half points a game
00:59:46
Speaker
while getting 6.3 rebounds, dishing out 4.8 assists, and getting 3.8 steals, blocking 3 shots. The girl does about everything but sell tickets and run concessions. I mean, really. ah But she's not alone. She's got a ah good team around her. Forward Kiki.
01:00:04
Speaker
Irafun also puts up points, regard in seven scoring.3 points green and grabbing 7.5 rebounds. Guard Kennedy Smith puts up 10.3 again, gets about 3.8 rebounds, two assists, three steals. Senor Raya Marshall scores nine points a game, snags 6.8 rebounds as well. I mean, these are the top three teams in women's sports. And you're looking at some of these numbers, why aren't we hearing about these girls?
01:00:31
Speaker
I mean, come on now, as most of you know, I, again, I've set up in big Ted country, live in Illinois, ah right near the university. Uh, and for the first time I bought season tickets to a, uh, to sport a sporting, uh, event and that's women's basketball. Uh,
01:00:49
Speaker
I like what I've seen the last couple of years and I wanted to see this up close and personal. And so far I've been to three and this team is, is this, this team is pretty good. it's It's really a good team. I don't think anybody notices it. Uh, but, and which is understandable at the University of Illinois.
01:01:07
Speaker
has not really had a good women's team for a a number of years. um Now they did have a good run there between 96 and 2007 when they had Teresa Grentz as the coach, ah currently a Hall of Fame coach. She has owns the most wins with 210. She had over 12 seasons at the helm.
01:01:28
Speaker
She has the most NCAA appearances of an Illinois coach with five. And this, so, you know, they've had some success, but it's not been consistent. Not like you saw down with Pat Summit in Tennessee or Gino up in UConn. But Shauna Green is the new coach and this is her third year at Illinois and already in just two years, and I was saying just in two years,
01:01:53
Speaker
She has won the NCAA appearance and last year they're invited to the inaugural women's basketball invitational tournament, which they won. Now green is 41 and 25 in the first two years and they're three and O this season. Um, and like I said, I I'm watching this team and it's really fun to watch. They've got, they're an old team, if you will, with a three fifth year seniors, two seniors.
01:02:20
Speaker
They are a long team. They've got a three or four girls over 6-3. They've got a ah girl couple girls 6-6, 6-7. But they play in such a disciplined fashion.

Uh, the most popular prayer on the team is Kendall Bostic. She's been around for three years and now, four years now. She's the fifth year senior. Uh, she's transferring from Michigan state. She came in after her freshman year and she's averaged almost a double double for her entire career. Her entire career is 10.7 rebound the points a game and 9.9 rebounds a game.
01:02:53

Now right now this season, she is averaging a double double scoring 11.3 points and snaring two point or 10.3 rebounds a game. She's only six, she's six two, but she plays a lot bigger and is often matched up against the bigger centers opposing team. She can play against them. She plays big, helping her out inside the courses forward, Bryn Shoup Hill. Now she came in with Shawna Green from Dayton. She transferred in when Green got the job.

um Now she doesn't score in double figures, but she you know gets about 8.3 points a game, but also gets 8.3 rebounds a game. So she's right there with with Kendall Bostic grabbing those boards and and getting it set up. She's a good defender inside. She's got four blocks already this season.
01:03:41
Speaker
Then you have guard Adalia McKenzie, leads the team in scoring at 14.3 points per contest, averages five boards a game at 5'10 as a guard. She can create the basket in the lane or drive the lane, create a basket, get to the foul line.
01:03:58
Speaker
um She's a really an exciting player to watch. Now she has plenty of backcourt help. In fifth year senior, Makaira Cook, who average 13 points a game, average three and a half assists. She also came from Dayton with Coach Green. She also has fifth year senior, Genesis Bryant, who transferred from North Carolina State after her freshman year.

and in greens or excuse me, after sophomore year. And we're for greens first season. and So between the three of those girls, they average 6.3 assists a game. So they kind of spread it out. There's a couple of reserves that see a lot of action or part of a double digit scoring. They've got six girls that score in double figures right now.
01:04:42
Speaker
Um, Gretchen Dolan, uh, as a sophomore, averaging 11 points a game. She's one of the second best shooter on the team at 33%. And you also have Mississippi state transfer sophomore, Jasmine Brown Hager, uh, averaging 10 points a game. Now grandma's Brown was originally recruited by Illinois. She went to Mississippi state, didn't like it there. And Illinois was fortunate to bring her back in.
01:05:05
Speaker
Now, Coach Green has done a good job of that, bringing in transfers, mixing it with good freshman, like when they got Gretchen Dolan last year, and Corey Allen was another one. um One player that I was really excited to see, and I'm not going to get the chance to, it because she tore an ACL. She's out for the season. And that 6'7 center, Leti Vasconcelos, a sophomore transfer from Baylor. um But like I said, she's out for the season.
01:05:32
Speaker
um And as far as bringing players in, you know, they've already signed a five star guard for next year. Destiny Jackson, who is right now been named to the Naismith Trophy Girls High School Player of the Year pre-season watch list. She's a five, six point guard from whitneying high school Whitney Young High School in Illinois.
01:05:53
Speaker
um And Coach Green and her staff, they're not afraid to go international on this as either. they They reach out. They've signed three players and that will be coming in next season from outside the US, a 6'3 forward Sariah Parchment from Canada, 6'3 forward Manuela Alves from Brazil, and 6'3 guard Erika Feeney from Australia.
01:06:15

now 80 Josh Whitman earlier this year extended coach Green's contract until 2030. That's how much she has done in just two years with this team. Uh, but there's four additional extensions on that depending on certain metrics that could keep her into 2034. Um, yeah so as I say, I'm going to start doing more about this, uh, women's sports and, uh, this is going to be a regular feature on the program. You know, we'll talk, uh, basketball and soccer and softball.
01:06:45
Speaker
Um, you know, and I'll try and get some other people in to help me with that. Cause you know, I was, I don't know all that much about it and I can only know what, uh, what I can read. and And so getting some help with that.
